Intellectual property—a patent for an invention, trademark for a name or logo, or copyrighted book, song, or more—is oftentimes more valuable than you think. Here's why:
•It can be passed on. Even though intellectual property is intangible, it can still be given to the ones you want–and if you don't include it in your estate plan, it can pass to your statutory heirs, or the state, whether you like it or not
•It can outlive its creator. Intellectual property rights don't end with the life of the creator. Their terms are statutorily defined and can extend beyond–sometimes far beyond–the death of the inventor, author or owner
•Trademarks are infinitely renewable. The life of a trademark is potentially endless as long as it is properly used and renewed
•Copyrights ALWAYS outlive their authors In most cases, copyrights are protected for the life of the author plus 70 years.
